Welcome new SLIS students!
SLIS Orientation dates are listed here for your reference. More details will be posted as they become available. We will also send orientation items to you in the mail.
Feel free to contact the SLIS Admissions Office with any questions (email: slis@indiana.edu) - (phone: 812.855.2018). This page is primarily for SLIS Master Degree and Specialist Degree students. Doctoral students will receive additional information.
Plan to attend SLIS Orientation (Summer or Fall). These sessions are designed to help welcome you - and to give you an opportunity to meet fellow students, SLIS faculty and staff. The sessions are the beginning of a variety of orientation events hosted at SLIS and at Indiana University to help you as you begin your graduate studies.
The SLIS Autumn Reception is a fun event. SLIS student chapters of professional association will sponsor activities during September. The GPSO (Graduate and Professional Student Organization) will also arrange a number of events.
In addition, students are encouraged to attend talk series, UITS (University Information Technology Services) free workshops, and IU Libraries free workshops. These opportunities will help you to network with people in the field, and will help enhance your résumé.
Effective July 1, 2013, SLIS will merge with the School of Informatics and Computing. We will become the Department of Information and Library Science (ILS). There will be additional information sent out as we finalize the transition. We look forward to this new partnership, and to the positive impact it will have for our students.
Scholarships: If you applied in time for the January 15th scholarship deadline, those decisions should be made by mid-April. SLIS is a part of the Council of Graduate Schools - (with the agreement that no school should require that you accept a scholarship prior to April 15th.) SLIS scholarship offers will be made by email. Notification that you did not receive an offer should be sent out by mail by the end of April. Student loans are a separate process managed by the IU Office of Student Financial Assistance.
Want to start in the Summer? Students admitted for the fall semester may request to begin in the summer. Contact the SLIS Admissions Office to make this change. Sometimes arriving in Bloomington for the Summer II session can be helpful for classes, housing, and student job issues.
Interested in the Dual MIS/MLS Option? Email the Director of Admissions Rhonda Spencer (spencerr@indiana.edu) an additional personal goals statement describing your academic and career goals, and a request to be changed to this dual degree option.
Early Registration: New Fall 2013 students should have access to register starting around June 1st, or about 4 weeks after their admissions. International students register during International Student Orientation.
SLIS/SoIC Merger July 2013: This summer SLIS and the School of
Informatics will merge to form the School of Informatics and Computing. Students
admitted for Fall 2013 will be joining the Department of Information and Library
Science (ILS) in the new school. There will be no change in the degrees
SLIS/ILS offers. Admission and content requirements will remain the same; only
the administrative structure will change. Please feel free to contact me if you
have any questions.
Sincerely, Rhonda Spencer, SLIS Director of
Admissions and Placement (spencerr@indiana.edu)
