A detailed proposal should be prepared for (and in consultation with) the faculty member directing the project before completeing the from.
Select the appropriate instructor from the dropdown below, and click "Proceed to secure form".
On the SLIS Approval form, fill out the required information including the "Brief description of the project" and the "Circumstances which make this project appropriate."
Click on "Submit form for Instructor Approval." On the next page, you can generate a PDF for your records.
What happens next involves your faculty sponsor. He or she receives an email indicating that you have filled out the form with a link that allows him or her to view the form online. There are two options: "View Submission" and "Deny Submission." If the faulty member did not arrange an independent study with you, he or she can deny the submission without viewing it.
From the "View Submission" page, the faculty sponsor can read a description of your project and approve or deny it. If approved, you are all set and will receive an email indicating that your independent readings or research is approved! If denied, the submission is removed and you have to start over.
Access to the form is permitted only from SLIS wired computers or the IU VPN.
S601 allows students to study a specific field of specialization in which there is not enough interest to warrant regular classroom instruction. Readings courses are often extensions of work begun in a course, or in some other way build on preparation received during one’s studies at SLIS. For example, a student may trace the development of digital libraries or investigate the nature of interaction in virtual information environments.
When registration in S601 appears to be warranted, the student should ask the SLIS faculty member most closely related to the area of investigation to guide the student’s work. This proposal form should be completed, including a detailed proposal, and submitted using the form below. It should clearly define the research to be undertaken, the circumstances which make it appropriate for the student to conduct this research, and the nature and extent of the final project or other indication of how the work will be documented
Although there is considerable latitude in how S601 courses are taught, the general expectation is 50 to 60 hours of work for each credit hour. In addition, students are expected to meet, at their own initiative, with the instructor at least five times during the semester (three to four times during a summer term).
