Story: Indiana Libraries and the West Baden Springs Hotel

The Indiana Library Federation’s journal, Indiana Libraries is edited by Kristi Palmer (MLS'03); she is also the Digital Scholarship Team Leader at the IUPUI University Library. Over the years, Indiana Libraries has included contributions from many SLIS alumni who work in Indiana libraries and contribute to this professional association - and journal. Earlier this year Alberta Davis Comer (MLS'02) was guest editor for a special issue on academic libraries. Comer is the Dean of Library Services at Indiana State University.

Dina Kellams (MLS'01) and Rhonda Spencer (SLIS Director of Admissions and Placement) co-edited the second issue for 2012. Kellams is Associate Archivist with the Indiana University Office of Archives and Records Management. She is also the faculty sponsor for the Society of American Archivists - Student Chapter.

Volume 31, Issue 2 included contributions for SLIS students, alumni, faculty, and colleagues. The issue is available online as a PDF. The title is -

  • "There is a lot of library history tied to this special place. Did you know that the 50th American Library Association Conference was held at the West Baden Springs Hotel in 1928? The Indiana Library Association held their conference there in 1923. During World War I, the hotel was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers — complete with an ALA-supported library. Having a sense of place - a sense of investment in one’s state and community - adds to the enjoyment of work in Indiana libraries."
