Fall 2003
As the fall semester began for IU, the School of Library and Information Science greeted not only a new crop of students but also numerous other developments that will impact the future of the school. The resignation of former Dean Blaise Cronin, the review of master's degree programs for re-accreditation by the American Library Association, a minimal increase in state funding, and the ongoing development of the university's new School of Informatics pose significant challenges to SLIS. Those challenges also create opportunities, and now more than any previous time it is critical for alumni to stay connected to SLIS and demonstrate their support for the school.
During the past few years, under the leadership of previous Alumni Board presidents Bev Martin and Jan Gillespie, the SLIS Alumni Board began to re-examine its role and look for ways to strengthen and enhance alumni relations with the school. That process will continue during the coming year; I hope that you will help the Board chart this new course by providing input to me and to fellow Board members on what you believe are important issues for alumni as well as ways to remain in touch with the school and fellow alumni. It is an honor to serve as the new president of the SLIS Alumni Board. I will be working closely with fellow Board members, Interim Dean Debora Shaw, SLIS students, alumni, and representatives from the IU Alumni Association and IU Foundation to develop and maintain a meaningful role for alumni.
We can all take great pride in the accomplishments of the school during Dean Cronin's tenure and the continued high regard for SLIS within the profession. As alumni, we serve as ambassadors for the distinguished level of excellence of Indiana University and SLIS. Please join me and my fellow board members on this new journey by becoming a vocal and active participant in the SLIS Alumni Association.
